A good wool, Persian or oriental rug you can often clean very successfully, but you should never treat it like an ordinary carpet or a washable rug at home. Older fibres, natural dyes, worn fringes, repairs, moth damage and previous cleaning attempts can all change what is safe.
If you only remember one thing, make it this: do not rush into deep cleaning an antique rug at home. Blot spills where suitable, vacuum gently, avoid harsh cleaning products and ask for advice before adding moisture, steam or stain removers.
